FBR Invoice Error Codes: The Complete Guide

The main categories of FBR digital invoice error (auth, schema, QR, tax-mismatch) explained in plain language, with what usually fixes each one.

How FBR validation actually works

Every invoice submitted through FBR's digital invoicing system is checked, in real time, against a fixed set of validation rules before it's accepted. This is a synchronous check: your software submits, FBR's system validates immediately, and you get back either a stamped, verifiable invoice or a numeric error code explaining what failed. There is no "submit now, fix later" for a rejected invoice; until it validates, it hasn't been issued.

FBR's error dictionary is large (the exact count depends on the API version), and the raw responses are terse — a four-digit number and a placeholder message, with little explanation of the underlying cause. That gap between "here's your error code" and "here's what to actually do" is where most of the frustration with digital invoicing lives, and it's the gap this guide (and our FBR Compliance Hub) is meant to close.

Broadly, the codes fall into five categories.

Authentication and token errors

These fire before FBR even looks at your invoice content — the problem is with how your software identified itself. Common causes include an expired API token, a wrong client ID or secret, or a token that's technically valid but not bound to your specific registration. The most common real-world version of this is a sandbox token accidentally left in a production configuration, or vice versa. We cover this specific failure mode in detail in our guide to fixing FBR error 0401/0402.

Schema and data errors

Once authentication passes, FBR checks that your invoice payload actually matches the required structure: a missing buyer NTN where one is required, an incorrect HS code, a malformed date, or a field left blank that FBR expects populated. These errors are almost always a data-quality problem rather than a software bug — dirty product or buyer master data is one of the most common root causes of rejected invoices.

Tax-calculation mismatches

FBR recalculates the tax on your invoice independently and compares it to what you submitted. Small rounding differences, or invoices priced on the wrong base, will fail this check. The most notable example is the 3rd-Schedule retail-price mismatch — common in pharmacy and pharma-adjacent businesses — which we walk through step by step in our error 0102 guide.

QR and IRN generation failures

Assuming your invoice validates on content and tax, FBR still has to generate and return your invoice reference number (IRN) and QR code. Failures here are less common but tend to be systemic — a sign that something upstream (often authentication or a malformed field) prevented FBR from completing the invoice record, rather than a fault with the QR mechanism itself.

Network errors

The last category has nothing to do with your invoice at all: IP whitelisting mismatches, connection timeouts, or a dynamic IP address that no longer matches what's registered against your integration. These show up as generic failures and can be mistaken for data problems, wasting time chasing the wrong fix.

Where the official glossary is thin

FBR's own documentation is functional but sparse — it names the codes without always explaining the underlying business logic behind them, and the numbering has shifted somewhat between versions of PRAL's technical specification. If a code you're seeing doesn't match what you read elsewhere, it's worth checking which API version your source is describing before assuming the guide is wrong.

A note on the "kaise thek karen" search pattern

If you found this guide searching for how to fix a specific rejection in Roman Urdu — "fbr invoice error kaise thek karen" — the short answer is the same regardless of language: identify which of the five categories above your code falls into, then work backward from there. Auth errors point to your credentials, schema errors point to your data, tax-calculation errors point to your pricing logic, and network errors point to your connection — rarely to the invoice itself.

Stopping errors before they happen

A useful fix for many of these categories isn't a faster response to rejections — it's pre-flight validation that catches the same problems before submission. Clean product and buyer master data, correctly bound tokens (confirmed during sandbox scenario testing before you ever go live), and software that checks tax calculations locally before sending anything to FBR will prevent many of these codes before they ever reach you.

Aboha does not translate FBR errors today. Aboha Digital Invoicing is coming soon and is planned to check each invoice against FBR's rules before sending it, so more of these problems are caught early. Tasdeeq by Aboha is live for counter receipts with an FBR invoice number and QR. If your team is fighting rejections right now, contact us and we can look at your error pattern and tell you which category it falls into.

Frequently asked questions

How many FBR error codes are there?

The number varies by API version, and FBR's own documentation is the authority. Some secondary sources cite roughly 100 codes, but check the latest PRAL technical documentation for the current count, since numbering has shifted.

Why do I get an error even though my invoice looks correct?

Most rejections trace to one of five categories — authentication, schema, tax-calculation, QR/IRN generation, or network — not to the visible invoice content itself.

Where can I find the official list of error codes?

FBR and PRAL's technical documentation is the authoritative source, though the numbering has been revised across API versions — always confirm the code you're seeing against the current spec rather than an older cached list.

FBR invoice error kaise theek karen?

Start by identifying which of the five categories your rejection falls into — authentication, schema/data, tax-calculation, QR/IRN, or network. The fix follows the category: auth errors point to your credentials, schema errors to your data, tax errors to your pricing logic, and network errors to your connection — rarely to the visible invoice content itself. The category guide above walks through each one.
